Evolutionary psychology is a theoretical approach in the social and natural sciences that examines psychological structure from a modern evolutionary perspective.

Evolutionary psychology is inspired by the work of Charles Darwin and applies his ideas of natural selection to the mind. Darwin's theory argues that all living species, including humans, arrived at their current biological form through a historical process involving random inheritable changes. Some changes are adaptive, that is, they increase an individual's chances of surviving and reproducing. Changes of this kind are more likely to be passed on to the next generation natural selection , while changes that hinder survival are lost. Natural selection is driven by changes in the environment.

By Saul McLeod , updated The biological approach believes us to be as a consequence of our genetics and physiology. It is the only approach in psychology that examines thoughts, feelings, and behaviors from a biological and thus physical point of view. Therefore, all that is psychological is first physiological. A biological perspective is relevant to the study of psychology in three ways:.

There is abundant evidence, some of it reviewed in this paper, that personality traits are substantially influenced by the genes. Much remains to be understood about how and why this is the case. We argue that placing the behavior genetics of personality in the context of epidemiology, evolutionary psychology, and neighboring psychological domains such as interests and attitudes should help lead to new insights. We suggest that important methodological advances, such as measuring traits from multiple viewpoints, using large samples, and analyzing data by modern multivariate techniques, have already led to major changes in our view of such perennial puzzles as the role of "unshared environment" in personality. In the long run, but not yet, approaches via molecular genetics and brain physiology may also make decisive contributions to understanding the heritability of personality traits.

We describe the scientific enterprise at the intersection of evolutionary psychology and behavioral genetics—a field that could be termed Evolutionary Behavioral Genetics —and how modern genetic data is revolutionizing our ability to test questions in this field. We first explain how genetically informative data and designs can be used to investigate questions about the evolution of human behavior, and describe some of the findings arising from these approaches. Second, we explain how evolutionary theory can be applied to the investigation of behavioral genetic variation. We give examples of how new data and methods provide insight into the genetic architecture of behavioral variation and what this tells us about the evolutionary processes that acted on the underlying causal genetic variants. Although both evolutionary psychology and behavioral genetics arose in the s as attempts to integrate the study of human behavior with other branches of biological science, the two fields have largely developed in isolation. Evolutionary psychology has primarily focused on using evolutionary theory to explain species- or sex-typical behavioral features—why people tend to find particular traits appealing in romantic partners or friends, for example. Behavioral genetics, on the other hand, has primarily focused on understanding proximate causes of variation among individuals—to what extent genetic and environmental influences are responsible for behavioral differences between individuals, and which specific genetic polymorphisms or environmental factors are responsible.

Evolutionary behavioral genetics

Evolution is the process by which populations of organisms change over generations. Genetic variations underlie these changes. Genetic variations can arise from gene mutations or from genetic recombination a normal process in which genetic material is rearranged as a cell is getting ready to divide. These variations often alter gene activity or protein function, which can introduce different traits in an organism.

Jump to Navigation. In this course we examine major episodes in the history of evolution and genetics in the twentieth century. Topics include Darwinian evolution, sociobiology and evolutionary psychology, eugenics, and genetic screening and therapy. We will examine different views about the control of evolution and genetic manipulation in their socio-cultural-economic context and discuss the ethical and social implications of those views.

Evolutionary psychology uses evolutionary theory to explain similarities in psychological characteristics. According to evolutionary psychologists, patterns of behavior have evolved through natural selection, in the same way that physical characteristics have evolved. Because of natural selection, adaptive behaviors , or behaviors that increase reproductive success, are kept and passed on from one generation to the next. Because reproductive success is such a hot topic in evolutionary theory, evolutionary psychologists often choose to study mating behavior.
