UN Climate Change News, 27 October — Increasing temperatures and sea levels, changing precipitation patterns and more extreme weather are threatening human health and safety, food and water security and socio-economic development in Africa, according to a new report devoted exclusively to the continent. The State of the Climate in Africa report , a multi-agency publication coordinated by the World Meteorological Organization WMO , provides a snapshot of current and future climate trends and associated impacts on the economy and sensitive sectors like agriculture. It highlights lessons for climate action in Africa and identifies pathways for addressing critical gaps and challenges. The report was released on 26 October at a ministerial-level launch to highlight the urgency of climate action in Africa and the current state of capacity. The risks are becoming more severe.

Economywide impacts of climate change on agriculture in Sub-Saharan Africa

Climate change and agriculture are interrelated processes, both of which take place on a global scale, with the adverse effects of climate change affecting agriculture both directly and indirectly. This can take place through changes in average temperatures , rainfall , and climate extremes e. Climate change is already affecting agriculture, with effects unevenly distributed across the world. Agriculture contributes towards climate change through anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions and by the conversion of non-agricultural land such as forests into agricultural land. A range of policies can reduce the risk of negative climate change impacts on agriculture [9] [10] and greenhouse gas emissions from the agriculture sector.

Climate change is expected to make agricultural development in Africa more challenging. Weather patterns are becoming less favorable in many instances, increasing the volatility of crop and livestock yields.

Metrics details. Many projections of the impact of climate change on the crop, livestock and fishery production sectors of African agriculture are reported in the literature. However, they may be arguably too general to understand the magnitude of impact and to inform adaptation strategies and policy development efforts that are tailored to promoting climate-smart agriculture in the West African region alone. This paper was synthesized from several scholarly literature and aimed at providing up-to-date information on climate change impacts, adaptation strategies, policies and institutional mechanisms that each agriculture subsector had put in place in dealing with climate change and its related issues in West Africa. For each subsector crop, fishery and livestock , the current status, climate change impacts, mitigation and adaption strategies have been analyzed.

The demand for irrigation is likely to increase in South Africa as a result of increased temperatures and evaporation rates. Rain-fed agricultural crops are likely to experience a decline in average annual yields. This is particularly the case for maize and wheat, which are staple foods. Soybean and sugarcane are likely to experience no change or an increase in average annual crop yields as precipitation increases offset higher evaporation rates in regions where these crops are grown. However, the sector is directly affected by precipitation, temperature, and evaporation, and is thus particularly vulnerable to climate change. Climate change impacts will vary across space for example, some regions may become dryer while others receive more rainfall and across crops due to differences in the way crops respond to climatic conditions.

Он подумал было попросить пилота радировать Стратмору, чтобы тот передал его послание Сьюзан, но не решился впутывать заместителя директора в их личные дела.
