The Public Health Nutrition PHN specialization combines principles and practices from nutrition and social and behavioral science to develop, implement and evaluation of programs and policies that promote optimal nutrition and population health and well-being. Doctoral students who concentrate in PHN will be skilled in quantitative and qualitative methods, program development and evaluation, health disparities, health behavior change, and health policy.

Public health nutrition is the application of nutrition and public health principles to design programs, systems, policies and environments that aims to improve or maintain the optimal health of populations and targeted groups.

Community nutrition encompasses individual and interpersonal-level interventions that create changes in knowledge, attitudes, behavior and health outcomes among individuals, families or small, targeted groups within a community setting.

The terms "public health," "community health" and "population health" are often used interchangeably with public health being the broadest term with the longest history of use. Population health is a term that is becoming more common, often with a focus on people with shared characteristics such as race or ethnicity, socioeconomic status, geography and gender.
