This contribution proposes a model-based predictive control approach for combined longitudinal and lateral vehicle guidance. The controller, which has been designed for an automotive collision avoidance system, aims at following a desired evasion trajectory at the handling limits.

Thereby, the trajectory following problem is decomposed in a path following and a velocity trajectory tracking problem using the wheel steering angle and the longitudinal acceleration as control inputs.

The goals of vehicle dynamics control systems are twofold: First, they make vehicles safer by intervening to provide support in problematic driving situations. Because vehicle dynamics control systems influence vehicle movement, several of the systems have an important role to play in achieving the goal of autonomous driving. For example, the ESC deploys the braking action in autonomous vehicles. Vehicle dynamics control systems are undergoing continuous development to further improve vehicle safety and comfort. This dissertation presents state and parameter estimation methods using the Global Positioning System GPS for vehicle dynamics control. It begins by explaining basic vehicle dynamic models which are commonly used for vehicle dynamics control.
