While there are many theories in social work, systems theory is a unique way of addressing human behavior in terms of these multi-layered relationships and environments. The theory is premised on the idea that an effective system is based on individual needs, rewards, expectations, and attributes of the people living in the system.

Critical social work is the application to social work of a critical theory perspective. Critical social work seeks to address social injustices, as opposed to focusing on individualized issues. Critical theories explain social problems as arising from various forms of oppression and injustice in globalized capitalist societies and forms of neoliberal governance.

Theoretical Approaches in Social Work: Systems Theory

It critiques historical and contemporary establishment social work approaches to address oppression and marginalisation and argues that only a critical approach can affect social change for human betterment. Core skills imperative to a lifelong commitment to emancipatory social work practice are developed including critical thinking, critical and structural analysis, critical reflection and the use of critical theory to inform practice. A critical social work practice framework will be developed, informed by critical theory, critical social work approaches and principles of ethical social work practice. The course emphasises innovative, disruptive and creative practice solutions built on a foundation of critical thinking and structural analysis. Students are reoriented to new and innovative critical social work practice that draws on a rich history of collective action; linking experiences of oppression with emancipatory action for social change and social justice outcomes. In addition to timetabled contact hours, students are expected to do at least 6 hours of personal study each week to review lectures and read prescribed and recommended materials for this unit. The total individual workload of this unit will be around 9 hours including teamwork, individual self-study and reading.

Social work theories attempt to describe, explain and predict social events based on scientific evidence, studies and research. Social work perspectives draw from psychology, philosophy, economics, education and other fields to attempt to explain what drives and motivates people at various stages of life. That ensures competence in social work, which can increase social worker confidence. Social work theories help social workers analyze cases, understand clients, create interventions, predict intervention results and evaluate outcomes. While the theories are constantly evolving as new evidence is produced, referencing social work theories that have been used over time enables social workers to explore causes of behavior.

However, recently we have seen how this self-image has lost ground. In the present article, we have discussed how demands for evidence and scientific evaluations of social work have gradually pushed the discipline and practice in the direction of psychological measurements and methods. Here, we will identify a problematic development within the social and theoretical practice of social work, and make some suggestions regarding how to start discussing, analysing and dealing with this changing social landscape. We will identify some critical points and issues and present models of how to think about and develop a critical social work practice. Social workers are trained to take into consideration juridical, organizational, social, cultural, and psychological factors. Many of the text books used in social work can be described as cookbooks containing different and often contradictory theories, approaches, and methods. However, there is also a need to think in terms of broaden the attention, stretching from a structural, and social perspective to a psychological and therapeutic perspective cf.
