Linking Architecture and Education: Sustainable Design of Learning Environments
Kenn Fisher introduces emerging international trends in school planning and design, and the range of structures being explored across Australia. This is an article from the Architecture Australia archives and may use outdated formatting. State and territory governments continue to be responsible for providing, upgrading and maintaining school facilities. They have recently pursued a vigorous renewal agenda, in part to compete with the increased resources now available to the private school sector. Private schools are also investing very heavily in new infrastructure — there is a shift in trends where private school expenditure in Australia is now ranked third in the OECD as a percentage of GDP and only ranked twenty-first in public school funding. All states are implementing significant related school building programmes. This model is used in many schools but there is still some resistance to it, partly because of the s open-plan experience.

For the past forty years Anne Taylor has studied how schools, classrooms, playgrounds, homes, museums, and parks affect children and how they learn. As a result, she has developed a holistic, sustainable philosophy of learning environment design. She argues persuasively that architects must integrate their design knowledge with an understanding of the developmental needs of learners, while at the same time educators, parents, and students must broaden their awareness of the built, natural, and cultural environment to maximize the learning experience. Pedagogy and architecture
An architect is a person who plans, designs and oversees the construction of buildings. To practice architecture means to provide services in connection with the design of buildings and the space within the site surrounding the buildings that have human occupancy or use as their principal purpose. The Professional requirements for architects vary from place to place. An architect's decisions affect public safety, and thus the architect must undergo specialized training consisting of advanced education and a practicum or internship for practical experience to earn a license to practice architecture. Practical, technical, and academic requirements for becoming an architect vary by jurisdiction, though the formal study of architecture in academic institutions has played a pivotal role in the development of the profession as a whole.
This paper explores strategies which link knowledge acquisition and knowledge application in design studio teaching and learning. The results show that these strategies are not limited to the design studio, with more than half of them eight out of fourteen also applicable in theoretical subjects that sit outside the design studio unit and generate knowledge of relevance to studio projects. As such, the paper advocates for a multi-level approach involving the following: course design and curriculum development, teaching and learning pedagogies and organizational decisions regarding the deployment of staff as for collaborative team-based teaching. The results also recognize the relevance of problem-based and project-based learning to the broader higher education context and its dependence on a collaborative approach. This paper which synthesizes this work contributes to the literature on architecture pedagogy, specifically that related to the integration of theoretical and practical subjects.
