Civil—military relations Civ-Mil or CMR describes the relationship between civil society as a whole and its civil authority and the military organization or organizations established to protect it. CMR incorporates a diverse, often normative field, which moves within and across management, social science and policy scales. Its purpose was to test a hypothesis that posited that the colonial authority structure and the partition-oriented structural dynamics provided an important structural construct in explaining politics and the military in post-colonial Pakistan. The analysis has focused on the military in the colonial authority structure in which the former, along with the civil bureaucracy and the landed-feudal class, formed an alliance to pursue politico-economic interests in British India. The article has also explained and analysed the partition-oriented structural dynamics in terms of territory Kashmir and population Indian refugees.

In the newly independent Pakistan consisted of two distinct parts: the smaller but more densely populated East Pakistan, centred on the Ganges-Brahmaputra delta region, and the much larger West Pakistan, occupying the northwestern portion of the Indian subcontinent.
